What to expect from oral chemotherapy
|
|
-
Contact with your healthcare team.
Although you will be able to take
your
oral chemotherapy treatment at home, you will still need to see your
doctor regularly so that your progress can be monitored. Remember that
chemotherapy can have serious
side effects and you should call your doctor or nurse at any time if
you are concerned about the treatment you are taking or side effects you are
experiencing. This will help make sure that the problem does not develop into
a serious one. If necessary, your doctor will make adjustments to the dose you
are receiving, or give you other medication to alleviate the symptoms. If you
are in doubt about a side effect and you can’t get hold of your doctor, stop
treatment until you get further advice.
-
Treatment regimens.
If you are taking oral chemotherapy in
combination with another drug, you will need to go to hospital to
receive this treatment. How often you have to go into hospital will depend on
what treatment you are being given. However, in most cases, you will only need
to attend for a few hours per month. Click on the
individual drug options to find out more about the treatment regimens for
individual drugs.

Side effects.
As with all types of chemotherapy, there are some side
effects that are associated with oral chemotherapy. However, each person
reacts differently to treatment, and so the type and severity of these side
effects can vary from person to person. You may find it useful to use a
treatment diary to record any side effects you experience, so that you can
discuss them with your doctor or nurse during your next hospital visit. Look
in the Diet and Lifestyle
area of this site for tips on coping with some of the common side effects of
chemotherapy. Remember that if you are worried about side effects, contact
your doctor or nurse.
