Caring for someone with cancer is a difficult responsibility and can be lonely and upsetting. You may try to hide your feelings from the person you are caring for so as not to upset them. It can often be helpful to talk to someone outside the home. There are many organisations that you can talk to, which can offer you emotional and practical support.

While looking after someone with cancer, remember that you need to look after yourself as well. Caring for someone can be tiring, so be careful that you do not get run down and become ill yourself. Be honest about what you can and cannot do, and seek help if need be, without feeling like you are letting your loved one down.

Here are some tips to help you look after yourself:

  • Always eat at least one proper meal a day
  • Exercise regularly – this will make you feel relaxed as well as giving you an energy boost
  • Keep in regular contact with people outside the home and share your feelings with friends
  • Go and see your doctor straight away if you are feeling unwell
  • Try to make some time for yourself every day to do something that you enjoy
  • Recognise signs of stress, such as insomnia, headaches and digestive problems
  • You may find relaxation techniques or a massage helps you
  • Allow yourself to take a break (rest) for some days
  • Take care to stay healthy in body and mind
  • Take care of good personal hygiene
